Identify my coin

I'm an obsessive hoarder (and I post on this forum, go figure) and while looking through some old stuff I had stashed away I noticed a proof coin that I had hidden sometime ago. I've had it for so long that I don't even know what it is or really where I got it.

It is a New Zealand coin, 1980 mintage, in a green clamshell box. The coin has QEII on one side and a bird on the other. It is marked "One Dollar" on the bird side but does not have any weight or purity markings.

So, what is it?

Hi drewfu, does it read "Elizabeth II Queen of New Zealand", "Takahe" or "New Zealand Day" anywhere? I did an Ebay search and found similar coins 1974 & 1982..."New Zealand One Dollar"

Sounds like a proof coin of the everyday, garden variety NZ$1 coin. I can virtually assure you that if it is, it is not gold and would have been worth a lot more in 1980.:D

I think decebal got it right on...

It's a 1980 "Fantail." Mintage was 37.000 coins and the purity is .925. Total ilver content is .8095.

I wonder why I bought it...? Oh well, must have had a reason at the time!

Thanks for all the great responses.
